Echoes – Maeve Binchy & Irish Writers Festival

Founded in 2017, ECHOES proudly celebrates the life and work of Maeve Binchy and Irish writers. One of Ireland’s best loved and most renowned authors, the huge international reach of Maeve’s writing can be seen in the translation of her work into more than forty languages. Directed by Margaret Dunne, ECHOES is programmed and hosted by Dalkey Castle, in collaboration with Maeve’s husband, Gordon Snell in Maeve’s adored hometown of Dalkey. The Festival celebrates Maeve’s writing and legacy alongside the best of contemporary Irish writing.

Festival Friday

ECHOES opens on the Friday evening of the festival weekend with a performance of some of Maeve’s work, followed by a post-show discussion. For 2022, we are delighted to stage the one-person version of Maeve’s Minding Frankie adapted by Shay Linehan (by kind permission of Breda Cashe Productions. This will be followed by The Joys of Recording Maeve by Kevin Reynolds, Series Producer of Drama on One, RTE Radio One. Kevin was the commissioning editor for many of Maeve’s radio plays and was on hand during some of her most famous interviews.

Enjoy an exclusive immersion in the life and times of world-famous author Maeve Binchy in her adored hometown of Dalkey. With our knowledgeable guides, begin in the Writers’ Gallery with a video of Maeve talking about her writing. “I thought everyone came from a place like this…until we went to see the world and discovered we were spoiled rotten”. Hear the story of the Gordon Snell rose.  Quench your thirst afterwards in the Queens next door.

Directions & Transport

Dalkey is on the coast, just south of Dublin City Centre. The DART journey is a relaxing experience travelling along the beautiful coast line with magnificent sea views.

Dalkey is approx. 30-35 minutes from Connolly, Tara or Pearse stations (travelling south).
